Zoorkhane Rituals or Varzesh-e Pahlavani, also called Varzesh-e Bastani, translated as “ancient sport” or “traditional sport”; is an Iranian national sport that consists of a series of bodybuilding and gymnastics as well as wrestling techniques accompanied by the rhythm of tombak. In addition, this sport places great importance on the chivalrous spirit, courtesy, and bravery. Varzesh-e Pahlavani is normally performed in a zoorkhaneh where different tools are used for training (for example Mīl, Kabbadeh, Sang, and Takhteh Shena). The practitioners of this sport are called Pahlavan (literally “athletes”).
and what are Zoorkhaneh Rituals? The Zoorkhaneh itself is like an octagonal pit about 1 m deep, in which on a dirt floor, the pahlevan athletes train. Unlike gymnastics practiced in the West, exercises constitute a real team sport combining physical and flexibility tests, specific rituals, and respect for moral and ethical rules. The Pahlevan move with the rhythm of the sound of a drum played by the morshed or guide, himself seated in an elevated place in the hall.
The practice of Varzesh-e Pahlavani is still alive in the popular districts of Tehran, Isfahan, Yazd, and other cities of Iran. It is a place where we practice spirituality, religion for personal development, humility, modesty, and with a touch of mysticism.
